Justin Melkmann
Slap In The Face: My Obsession With GG Allin
Self Released

Jeff Karbow

As much as I enjoy comic books I can honestly say that I have never reviewed a comic book in any capacity except for maybe when I was like 7 years old and me and my buddies would draw our own comics and evaluate one another's. There's always a first for everything though...

Well, as you can tell by reading the title of the comic book, it's about GG Allin. Well, it is and isn't. More so it's about a fan-boy of GG's, namely the author of the comic book Justin Melkmann (nugget of knowledge: Justin worked on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart).

The story starts off with backwards, as Justin tells the readers about how his documentary about GG Allin has fallen through the cracks on the account of Merle (GG's brother) decided that he did not want people to read about GG's life. The story then shifts to how Justin first found out about GG, how his obsession grew and then later, the process of trying to write said documentary. I will spare you the details, however, so you can read for yourself, but rest assure it is page turner.

In the preface of the comic Justin even warns the reader that the illustrations and fonts used are crude but it more than suffices. I mean this isn't supposed to be some No Image, Marvel Comics type shit it's supposed to look like a comic strip that you would find in any number of hardcore fanzines.

Rating: 4/5
Synopsis: Personally, I think the $3.00 asking price is a bit much but other than that this was an enjoyable read. The illustrations are a bit crude but that's what makes this comic what it is. The story of the comic is definitely interesting to say the least.
