Smartbomb
Chaos and Lawlessness
Think Fast! Records

John Martin

This band plays a fast-paced, throwback style of hardcore punk rock. The debut EP from Smartbomb features eight tracks, clocking in around the 12 minute mark. Who is Smartbomb? As with most bands in any punk genre, this band features members from other relatively known bands. In this case, Smartbomb has members that hone their chops in No Trigger and Shock Nagasaki.

This band fits right in with Think Fast! Records with the pissed-off, snotty hardcore that sounds like you've been transported back to a house show in 1980's Southern California. 7 seconds, Fear, and ALL/Descendents come to mind when listening to this EP. Just because this CD takes me back to classic skate punk, doesn't mean it will get too many more rotations from me though.

As good as the aforementioned bands are...Smartbomb gets tiresome real quick. As I stated before, this EP comes in at just under 12 minutes and I find myself looking for a new CD before the 10 minute mark hits. The frantic pace is not my problem, however, the lack of diversity between the eight tracks is my primary concern. Maybe because I'm older now, but I prefer songs that are more distinguishable from one another. Not to mention the fact, that I would listen to my classic punk albums before I would get stoked to put this CD in my player. Admirable EP that just doesn't offer anything worthwhile to my current music collection.

Rating: 2.5/5
Songs Worthy of Replay: "You Decide", "Throw In The Towel" & "750ML"
Synopsis: The kind of band that you would be happy to see open for one of your favorite hardcore punk bands at a local show, however, would you really remember the band a few months later? Could you sing-along if they played another local show anytime after the first? Most likely not, since the band has a lack of diversity and originality. They do play some decent skate/thrash, hardcore punk songs though and might be your cup of tea if you're really into that subgenre. Hit up their website or Myspace and judge for yourself.
